MURDER USA: CAIN & ABEL / Nelson Cruz Dies After Being Assaulted, Brother Arrested in Palm Sunday Fatal Fight

ALEXANDRIA, VA. The Alexandria Police Department reports that what had first been investigated as an assault between two brothers is now being investigated as a homicide. The assault took place on Palm Sunday, March 25, 2018, in the 2200 block of N. Beauregard Street.

At approximately 6:24 p.m., police were dispatched to fight between relatives. Upon arriving, officers located an unconscious man and he was transported to an area hospital.

Brian Cruz-Segovia, 23, of Alexandria, was arrested the day of the assault and charged with Malicious Wounding.

The victim, Nelson Cruz, 28, also an Alexandria resident, succumbed to his injuries after being taken off life support and died at the hospital on March 28, 2018.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner reported on March 29, 2018, that they determined the manner of death to be a homicide.

Additional charges may be pending and will be determined after consultation with the Alexandria Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney. Police ask that anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detective William Oakley at 703.746.6606.

Nelson Cruz was charged in Alexandria District Court for the following: DWI on Nov. 16, 2014, found guilty on March 25, 2015, and fined $400.00 with a suspended sentence of 175 days in jail.
