MURDER USA: Newport News Police announce the arrest of Lawrence Smith in Easter Sunday fatal stabbing
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Newport News Police report the quick arrest of an Easter Sunday murder suspect when he turned himself in to the York County Sheriff.
On April 1st, 2018 at approximately 5:44 PM, Newport News Police were dispatched to the 100 block of Louise Drive in reference to a stabbing.
Upon arrival, officers located the victim, 39-year-old Laquita Ball of the 100 block of Louise Drive, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Ms. Ball was transported by medics to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries at 7:22 PM.
The suspect, who is known to the victim, was identified as 43-year-old Lawrence Smith of the 100 block of Louise Drive in Newport News. A family member of Smith called the York County Sheriff’s Office, so he could turn himself in.
Smith was taken into custody at a gas station on Route 17 in York County. Smith was transferred to Newport News and was subsequently charged with Murder 1st Degree.
