MONTGOMERY COUNTY POLICE BEAT: Was Attempted Rape Another Montgomery County Sanctuary Success Story?

SILVER SPRING, MD. – A man who attacked a girl walking past him in the lobby of an apartment building was captured by police after the teenager reported the assault and told police he just wanted to have sex with her.

Detective P. L. Hennessy from the Montgomery County Police Department – Special Victims Investigations Division charged Nahom Mamo, 19, who court records reveal has an unknown address, with the sexual assault and attempted second-degree rape of a 17-year-old female.  Mamo committed these offenses on April 18, 2018, inside an apartment building lobby in Silver Spring.

On Thursday, April 19 at approximately 7:29 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 8700 block of Colesville Road for the report of an attempted rape that just occurred.

The investigation by officers revealed that the suspect was standing in the lobby of an apartment building located in the 8700 block of Colesville Road and engaged the victim in a conversation as she walked past him.  During the conversation, the suspect grabbed the victim by her wrists and sexually assaulted her.  The victim broke free from the suspect’s grasp, fled, and called 9-1-1.

Police: Suspect admitted to grabbing the victim and stated to investigators that he wanted to have sexual intercourse with her.

The victim provided responding officers with the suspect’s physical description.  Officers located an individual exiting the apartment building who matched the suspect’s description and whose pants were unzipped.  They stopped the subject and identified him as Mamo.  The victim identified Mamo as the suspect who had assaulted her.   Mamo was arrested and during a police interview, he admitted to grabbing the victim and stated to investigators that he wanted to have sexual intercourse with her.

Mamo was transported to the Central Processing Unit where he was charged with attempted second-degree rape, fourth-degree sexual offense – sexual contact, and second-degree assault.  Mamo was held without bond and after a bond review in District Court was committed to the jail on April 20, 2018. Mamo will have his first court hearing on May 18, 2018.
