DWI HIT PARADE Nicole Bland charged with DUI-drugs in a fiery triple car crash while driving infant twins
SUNDERLAND, MD. – Calvert Sheriff Mike Evans reports that an impaired driver with twin infants in her vehicle caused a three-vehicle crash as she drove while impaired by drugs.
Police say that on May 12th, 2018 at approximately 3:03 p.m. deputies responded to Maryland Route 2 and Wayside Drive in Sunderland for a report of an accident involving 3 vehicles. The investigation revealed a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Mathew Austin Smith, 30, of Bushwood Maryland, was waiting to turn at Wayside Drive.
A 2013 Dodge Caravan, driven by Nicole Marie Bland, 32, of 701 Hickock Trail, Lusby, Maryland, was traveling northbound in the same area when it struck the Cavalier and sent it into oncoming traffic. The Cavalier subsequently struck a Toyota Prius, driven by Rachel Broderick, 34, of Huntingtown Maryland. The Cavalier and the Prius both caught fire. The occupants of the vehicles were removed by unknown citizens. Smith was transported by helicopter to a trauma center for his injuries.
The Dodge Caravan was driven by Ms. Bland and also had twin 6-month-old passengers in the vehicles. They were secured in car seats and uninjured. Ms. Bland was charged with Driving under the influence, reckless driving, and negligent driving as well as operating while impaired with children in the vehicle. and transported to the Calvert County Jail. This case is still under investigation by Dfc. Bowlan.
Bland was released on an unsecured bond of $10,000 on May 12, 2018. Bland must realize that the multiple charges filed against her are serious business as she declined the free taxpayer-provided public defender to represent her in Calvert District Court.
