ELECTION 2018: St. Mary’s Sheriff GOP Primary debate between Tom Phelan and Tim Cameron in Lexington Park, Md., on May 21, 2018. The candidates discussed needs of the Sheriff’s Department in terms of a new jail. Cameron disclosed that he finally is addressing the lack of minority hiring in the agency while Phelan describes his desire to lead the law enforcement team without any law enforcement experience.
Cameron opened with reciting how he had been unopposed in last two elections and pointed to the huge vote majority in the uncontested 2010 and 2014 election as a confirmation that he must be doing a good job. Phelan praised Cameron for a good job the day a student at Great Mills High School murdered his ex-girlfriend and shot another student before taking his own life.
The Heroin Highway to Hell went largely untouched while neither candidate was specific about traffic enforcement for curtailing the belligerent motorists on local highways.
Cameron also spoke of more space needs at headquarters and a new station in Lexington Park for extra cops to hole up inside instead of being assigned directly to the community.
Cameron seeks an unprecedented fourth term in office as Sheriff. Phelan says his leadership skills as a Squadron commander, test wing commander and business manager prepares him for the job.
