Maryland State Police Beat: Sunday Morning Highway Mayhem Leaves One Dead
WALDORF, MD. – A driver who had been involved in a wreck on Berry Road (Rt. 228) just west of Waldorf, on July 1, 2018, found herself with a disabled vehicle and stuck in the traveled portion of the divided highway at about 1:15 am. With the vehicle’s emergency flashers activated the driver, Breanna Rodgers, 24, of Waldorf, Md., and her passenger Kevin Cox, 24, of Brandywine, Md., remained in their 2012 Volkswagen Passat instead of seeking a safer place to await a tow truck.
The Volkswagen was severely impacted by a 2008 Cadillac Escalade operated by Sammie Davis, 43, of Upper Marlboro, Md., who failed to slow for the disabled vehicle in the highway and slammed into the rear of the stopped Volkswagen.
The crash caused Cox to be severely and mortally injured and died on the scene, according to the Maryland State Police.
Rodgers was flown to the trauma center at PG Hospital by Maryland State Police medevac chopper Trooper Two with serious injuries while Davis was taken to Fort Washington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
According to Maryland records, Davis was cited by Charles County Sheriff’s Deputy Corey Caywood with possession of marijuana and pleaded guilty in Charles County District Court on Nov. 19, 2013.
