DWI HIT PARADE: “Checkpoint Strikeforce” Initiative by Maryland State Police in Anne Arundel County Yields Eight DUI Arrests and Four CDS Violations

(ANNAPOLIS, Md.) – Maryland State Troopers removed eight impaired drivers from Anne Arundel
County roads during “Checkpoint Strikeforce” this weekend. In addition, four individuals were issued
civil citations for CDS violations.
Nineteen Maryland State Troopers participated in the sobriety checkpoint and saturation patrol
initiative in Anne Arundel County. The sobriety checkpoint was conducted on MD Route 450 in
Annapolis. During the 4-hour initiative, a total of 374 vehicles traveled through the checkpoint and an
additional 24 vehicles were stopped on highways in the Annapolis area. A total of eight drivers were
subsequently arrested for impaired driving and four individuals were issued civil citations for
possession of a marijuana less than 10 grams. The following is a list of enforcement results:

DUI Arrests 

Kendrick Ings, 28, Miramar, Fl.
Kayla Thompson, 27, Arnold, Md.
Deon Whittington, 29, Shady Side, Md.

Deon Justin Whittington, 29, of 1181 Cedar Avenue, Shady Side, Md., entered a guilty plea in Talbot County District Court on Nov. 23, 2015 to driving westbound on Rt. 50 at Rt. 331 when arrested by Maryland State Trooper I Rola. In a plea deal with Talbot County States Attorney Scott Patterson, Whittington was sentenced to 60 days in jail and zero fine.

  • On Dec. 2, 2015, in another plea deal but this time with Anne Arundel County States Attorney Wes Adams, Whittington entered a guilty plea to negligent driving, driving while revoked and was put on unsupervised probation for one year which likely taught him that needing a permit, insurance or registered vehicle was simply a farce.
  • On March 18, 2016, Whittington entered a guilty plea to driving without a permit in Anne Arundel District Court. THE DEAL: various traffic offenses including speeding at 60 mph in a 25 mph zone were dropped and he was sent to jail for ten days with all but two days suspended.
  • On Sept. 15, 2015, a charge of driving without a permit against Whittington was put on the Stet Docket by the Anne Arundel States Attorney Wes Adams with No fine and No time.
  • On July 25, 2012, Whittington entered in a plea deal on a charge of driving while revoked in Anne Arundel District Court following his arrest by Annapolis City Police Officer Brett Schrack. THE DEAL: in return for a plea of guilty, Whittington was sentenced to jail for one year with 361 days suspended and a fine of $1,000.

Maryland State Police SPIDRE, or State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort team, also
participated in the operation
