MURDER USA: Killing Godfrey Couple Caught on the Lam in Delaware
SEAT PLEASANT, MD. – PG Police report that Homicide Unit detectives charged two suspects in connection with the homicide on Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, in the city of Seat Pleasant. The suspects are 36-year-old Larence Godfrey Jr. and 41-year-old Michelle Godfrey, both of the 2000 block of Fort Davis Street in SE Washington. They are charged with the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Eric Smith Jr. of 68th Place in Seat Pleasant. The suspects are in custody in Delaware awaiting extradition to Prince George’s County.
According to police, on December 28th, at approximately 11:35 am, patrol officers were called to a home in the 200 block of 68th Place for the report of a shooting. They located the victim outside on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds. He died a short time later.
The preliminary investigation reveals the shooting stemmed from an on-going dispute between Larence Godfrey and the victim. Following the shooting, both suspects fled the state and were located in Delaware. In Prince George’s County, they are charged with first- and second-degree murder and related charges.
NEWARK, DEL. – The Delaware State Police have arrested Larence R. Godfrey, 36, and Michelle L. Godfrey, 41, both of Washington D.C., as out of state fugitives, based on warrants out of Prince Georges County, MD, charging them with 1st Degree Murder.
On Saturday morning, December 29, 2018, Delaware State Police homicide detectives were contacted by the Prince Georges County (MD) Police Department, in regard to the Godfrey’s, who were wanted in connection with a homicide that occurred in their jurisdiction on Friday, December 28, 2018. Information obtained during the course of their investigation determined that the suspects had fled to Delaware in an orange, Chevrolet HHR with Maryland tags, and were possibly in the Glasgow area of Newark.
At approximately 2:10 p.m., Detectives from the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit assisted by the Troop 2 Drug Unit and Governor’s Task Force, located the suspect vehicle at an apartment complex on Four Seasons Parkway in the area of S. College Avenue (DE Rt. 896), Newark. Detectives were able to confirm that the occupants of the vehicle matched the descriptions of the Godfrey’s. A traffic stop was then conducted by members of the Special Operations Response Team (SORT), resulting in both suspects being taken in to custody without incident.
Larence Godfrey was committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution and Michelle Godfrey to the Dolores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution, both on fugitive warrants, pending their extradition back to Maryland.
Larence Ricky Godfrey Jr. of 2026 Fort Davis Drive, S.E. Washington, D.C., was the subject of a bench warrant issued by a Prince Georges County Judge on Dec. 20, 2018 when he failed to appear for answer traffic charges dealing with operating an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. Godfrey’s attorney in that case is Bradley T. Warby of Largo, Md.
Godfrey entered a guilty plea to felony escape in Anne Arundel Circuit Court on July 25, 2014 and was given an extra year in the slammer. The good news for Larence Godfrey is that his present incarceration will likely end any child support payments that may be due.
Court records show that in October of 2018, dueling domestic family violence peace orders requested by both Godfreys’ were both denied by a PG County District Court Judge due to a lack of evidence.
