DIRTBAG ROUNDUP: Robert St. Russell Convicted of Beating Infant, Faces 25 Years in Prison

Never wanted the baby, beat the infant near to death while the mother was taking a shower

UPPER MARLBORO, MD – Robert St. Ronald Russell, 27, of 3201 Reed Street, Lanham, has been found guilty of first-degree child abuse and related offenses for causing life-changing injuries to his four-month-old son, Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha N. Braveboy announced on May 31, 2019.

After a three-day trial and approximately four hours of deliberation, the jury returned the guilty verdict.

On February 23, 2017, Prince George’s County police responded to a call for service for an unresponsive baby. Four-month-old Kweli St. Russell was taken to Children’s National Health System where doctors determined that he was suffering from several injuries, including severe head trauma, brain bleeds, broken ribs, and a fractured arm. Doctors quickly ruled that the injuries he suffered were not accidental.

Throughout the investigation, detectives learned that the victim was in the care of his mother and father that morning. The mother went to take a shower and left the baby with St. Russell. At some point, he came in and told the mother that Kweli had stopped breathing. The mother attempted to perform CPR on the baby, while 911 was called.

During the investigation, Police learned that Russell, who was living with the mother before he was born, never wanted the baby. During the trial, an expert witness established that an intentional assault caused all of the injuries suffered by Kweli.

Because of the brutal injuries caused by his father, Kweli will need medical care for the rest of his life.

“This case is especially heartbreaking, and I cannot understand how a parent could inflict such harm on their child,” said State’s Attorney Braveboy. “When I think of Mr. St. Russell’s horrible crimes, I am utterly horrified. I want to thank the police for their hard work on this case and the jury for their thoughtful deliberations and a guilty verdict.”

Sentencing for St. Russell is set for June 14, 2019. He faces up to 25 years in prison for his crimes.
