CAPITOL HEIGHTS, MD. – The killer of Alonzo Jackson has been sent to prison for life, reports Prince Georges County States Attorney Alisha Braveboy. On April 25, 2019, Wheeler, of Washington, D.C., was found guilty by a Prince George’s County jury of first-degree murder, armed carjacking, use of a handgun in a crime of violence and other related charges for killing Alonzo Jackson.

Back in 2016, Wheeler carjacked Jackson as he was pumping gas.  Wheeler shot him and then entered the vehicle.  After realizing the keys were not inside, he exited the vehicle, stood over him with a gun, and demanded the keys. Despite being fatally wounded, Mr. Jackson reached into his pocket, retrieved the keys and handed them to Wheeler who then drove off in his car.

“I am pleased that the court recognized the heinous acts Mr. Demarko Wheeler committed and that we were able to deliver justice,” said State’s Attorney Braveboy.  “I hope the family and loved ones of Mr. Alonzo Jackson can find some measure of peace in knowing that Wheeler will never be able to harm anyone ever again.”

Prince Georges Police say the Marine veteran dropped off his wife at work on the morning of July 20, 2016, and stopped to get gas at a BP station in Capitol Heights, Maryland.

Demarko Wheeler was arrested several days after the killing after someone called in a tip.

Police say Wheeler, then 20, was wearing a mask when he approached Jackson and shot him. He stole Jackson’s 2015 Dodge Charger, which was later found abandoned and burned, they said.

Alonzo Jackson worked at Safeway for thirty years before retiring.  He was a life-long resident of the District of Columbia where he and his wife raised their two sons.
