DWI HIT PARADE: Police say Raymond Jones Sr. was all over the narrow two-lane Solomon’s bridge when he hit a Ford truck head-on and bounced off a Dodge truck

SOLOMON’S ISLAND, MD. – Lucky for eight St. Mary’s County residents who were the occupants of two trucks when they were hit by a southbound Volvo piloted by a suspected impaired driver, that they were able to withstand the impact of the collision when the car rammed both trucks on the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge.

Calvert Sheriff’s Spokeswoman Kristen Leitch reports that on September 27, 2019, at approximately 7:50 p.m., deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported head-on collision involving 3 vehicles on top of the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge in Calvert County, Md.

Preliminary investigation revealed, a 1989 Volvo operated by Raymond Jones Sr., 51, of Lexington Park, Md., was traveling south on Rt. 4 reported to be all over the roadway.  As the Volvo entered the Thomas Johnson Bridge, it crossed the centerline, striking a Ford truck head-on operated by Charles McConnell, 41, of California, Md., and his two passengers. 

Cops: driver error and alcohol appear to be contributing factors in this crash

The Volvo continued southbound on the bridge, striking a Dodge truck operated by James Herbert, 36, of Mechanicsville, Md., and four juvenile passengers.  Jones was transported to Prince Georges Hospital Center via Maryland State Police helicopter where he is listed in critical but stable condition.  All other victims involved in the crash were treated on scene and signed refusals for medical treatment.

Currently, driver error and alcohol appear to be contributing factors in this crash reports Leitch.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Department Crash Reconstruction Team, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Department, Maryland State Police troopers, and the State Highway Administration assisted at the scene of the crash. 

Police say that numerous witness accounts corroborated the evidence found on the scene.
