DWI HIT PARADE: Retired Capital Police Officer Mark Latson indicted for killing Timothy Markin in a DUI crash

LA PLATA, MD. –  After months of investigation by the Maryland State Police, Charles County States Attorney Tony Covington finally took the evidence to the Charles County Circuit Court Grand Jury which handed down indictments related to the death on May 2, 2019.

The indictments were released on Nov. 8, 2019.

A bench warrant for Mark Andrew Latson, (DOB 08/25/1961) of 25770 Eldorado Farm Drive, in Mechanicsville, Md., was issued by the court and served the same day.  A bail bond review was held on Nov. 12, 2019, by a Charles County Judge and a preliminary hearing has been set for Dec. 13, 2019, with a pretrial conference scheduled for Feb. 26, 2020 and trial in Circuit Court for March 2, 2020.

The Indictments:

  • Felony Negligent Manslaughter
  • Two Counts of Felony Negligent Homicide while Under the Influence
  • Driving while under the influence of alcohol per se
  • Driving while under the influence of alcohol

Listed in court records as the attorney for Latson is Mandeep S. Chhabra of Annapolis, Md.

HUGHESVILLE, MD.  – Maryland State Police report that Mark Latson, who they believe may have been intoxicated and was driving the wrong way on Maryland Route 5 in Hughesville, killed another motorist in a head-on crash. Mark Latson retired from the U.S. Capitol Police in June 2016.

Police say that on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at approximately 0152 hours, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and Troopers from the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack responded for a report of a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles on northbound Maryland Route 5 in the area of Huckleberry Drive in Hughesville, Maryland. Due to the circumstances, the Maryland State Police CRASH Team responded to assume the investigation.

A preliminary investigation conducted by Troopers and the MSP CRASH Team indicates a 2016 Mercedes- Benz operated by Mark Latson, 57, of Hughesville, Maryland was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Maryland Route 5 in the area of Huckleberry Drive. At the same time, a 2008 Toyota Camry operated by Timothy Markin, 47, of Silver Spring, Maryland was traveling on northbound Maryland Route 5 in the area of Huckleberry Drive.

The Mercedes-Benz collided head-on with the Toyota Camry. The operator of the Toyota Camry was pronounced deceased on scene and the operator of the Mercedes-Benz was transported to Prince George’s Hospital for treatment. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this collision.
