WHY IS WALDORF TURNING INTO A CRIME HELLHOLE?

Cops seek gunmen in shooting at high noon on Mesquite Court

WALDORF, MD.  – In what used to be a busy commercial strip along Rt. 301, surrounded by a sprawling “new town” of St. Charles, an upscale shopping mall and sparkling new schools, Waldorf has become bigger in every conceivable way.  The subdivisions are larger, the shopping and the commercial area have become abundant in both numbers of retailers and choices available and the crime has evolved into what is routine in areas such as Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Murders and violence between gangs over turf and sale of drugs now explode in broad daylight and instead of being confined to the traditional slums of Oak Manor and Ell Lane, the blatant gunfire now takes place in high-end neighborhoods such as took place near Billingsly Road.

Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry sends out dozens of officers each week to community events to meet with children, pose for photos to place on social media and foster good relations with the public.  Now, Sheriff Berry might want to refocus law enforcement officers on battling crime when gunfire erupts routinely as it did on September 27, 2019, at approximately 12:15 p.m.

Sheriff Patrol officers responded to the area of Medinah Street and Mesquite Court in Waldorf for the report of a shooting and officers located the victim, a 34-year-old male, who was transported for serious but non-life-threatening injuries if one doesn’t count being shot in the stomach.

This shooting does not appear to be a random incident, reports Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Detective R. Johnson at 301-609-6453. Tipsters wishing to remain anonymous may contact Charles County Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS. A cash reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for the tip that leads to the arrest and indictment of the suspect(s).

Charles County Sheriff’s Officers Complete D.A.R.E. Instructor Training

Charles County Sheriff Troy D. Berry is pleased to announce the graduation of three school resource officers from the 35th Maryland D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Officer Training class recently held at the Maryland Public Safety Education and Training Center in Sykesville. PFC Jennifer Brown, PFC Stefan Hillman, and PFC Shawn Joffe were among officers from across the region to complete the two-week, 80-hour certification course to become some of the nation’s newest D.A.R.E. instructors.

D.A.R.E. is a community-based, nationwide program which links law enforcement, schools and parents in a partnership to educate children about the dangers of drugs, gangs, and violence. The class is taught by police officers who present information to children in a classroom environment, providing skills on how to resist drugs and how to build resiliency to staying away from drugs. The program also includes discussions on bullying, internet safety, cyber-bullying, and prescription drug abuse. D.A.R.E. instructors are certified to deliver programs to students from kindergarten through 12th grade.

In Charles County, school resource officers are assigned to every high school and middle school on a full-time basis. These officers are also responsible for interacting with students at elementary schools. “We are committed to ensuring safety in our schools as well as mentoring the youth in Charles County,” said Sheriff Berry. “Our School Resource Officers play a critical role in that endeavor, and teaching D.A.R.E. is one important tool they use. We hope this impacts the students and gives them something to think about when faced with tough choices in school and throughout life.”
