Short sentence for killer is completely nuts!

A Mother’s Lament

From Melissa Rose on Facebook:
Really wish it would it went to trial so the truth could be told and Peter O’Neil couldn’t just say what he wanted to. Charlie was walking away towards harbor when Elena was hit. He was bent over tending to her when he was stabbed from behind. His stab wounds are mostly in his back

DEALE, MD. – Anne Arundel County Police report the murder of a Deale area man occurred as a result of a violent confrontation at the Happy Harbor bar in Deale, Md., on Sunday, March 8, 2020.

Police reported that at approximately 11:00 p.m., the Anne Arundel County Police and Fire Departments responded to the Happy Harbor Bar for the report of an assault.

Police report that they found an adult male suffering from apparent upper body trauma consistent with sharp force injuries and evidence that he may have also been run over by a vehicle.

The victim was identified as Charles Daniel Connors 3rd, a twenty-one-year-old male, of 1187 Cedar Avenue in Shady Side, who was transported to a local Trauma Center where he died from the vicious stabbing that had been administered by the suspect.

Homicide detectives responded along with the Evidence Collection Unit which examined the crime scene and police say processed several items of evidentiary value which were collected for further forensic testing which will play a significant role in the prosecution of the alleged killer.

Multiple witnesses told police that an altercation took place between Conners and twenty-year-old Shane Conner Winemiller of 5912 Old Solomon’s Island Road in Tracy’s Landing, Md.  Following the stabbing of Conners, Winemiller fled the scene to his home.

Police say that Winemiller was taken into custody without incident at his residence, a home owned by his parents for the past twenty-two years, shortly after the homicide.

The home is located in the rural south county area of Anne Arundel, not far from Tracy’s Landing Elementary School. The neighborhood consists of modest homes set on lots that are surrounded by farms and pastures located on a section of the old road leading to Annapolis from the lower western shore of Maryland.

Consulting with the Anne Arundel County States Attorney’s Office, Shane Winemiller was charged with three felonies: 2nd Degree Murder, Manslaughter, Reckless Endangerment, and First-Degree Assault.

Police and the prosecutor at the bail hearing, Anne Arundel County Assistant States Attorney Darrian Nelson, said that the evidence indicated this was a targeted incident and not a random act of violence and that Winemiller, “acted in cold blood” and the assailant murdered Connors in front of Winemiller’s mother.

THE CHESAPEAKE TODAY All Crime All The Time

Winemiller employed the services of Glen Burnie attorney Peter Sean O’Neill for the bail bond hearing held on March 10, 2020, and a preliminary hearing set for April 8, 2020, in Annapolis District Court.  Winemiller was ordered held without bond by Judge Jonas Legum. At the bond hearing, O’Neill said that Conners was the aggressor and that Winemiller was acting to protect his mother.

At the bond hearing, O’Neill stated that Winemiller had been summoned to the bar by his girlfriend who needed a ride home due to her being inebriated. Defense attorney O’Neill claimed that Winemiller acted to protect his mother from Connors who had allegedly confronted her in a violent fashion.

Police say Winemiller admitted the murder weapon was his and that he stabbed the victim – repeatedly

Evidence collected at the scene included a bloody folding knife that allegedly had been implemented as the murder weapon in the deadly attack. When police apprehended Winemiller at his home, he allegedly admitted that the knife was his and police say that he admitted that he had repeatedly stabbed Connors.

The life of Winemiller is partly told by the photos he has posted on his Facebook page since 2012, going back to time spent on baseball leagues in South County, growing older, gaining a 1991 Ford pickup truck – which may have been used to assault the victim, a girlfriend and time spent on a crabbing boat in the Chesapeake Bay. The collage of photos reveals nothing of a deeply sadistic and horrific side of him, as the monster which erupted in a burst of violence on the eighth day of March that ended the life of another.

An article on the murder in the Annapolis Gazette that was published on March 10, 2020, elicited some strong comments from friends of the victim who were furious that the report failed to provide insight into the life of Charlie Conners.

This post on Facebook was one of them:

From Melissa Hall Jackson: “I’m very disappointed in this article. Instead of filling us in on the one who committed the MURDER, how about telling everyone about what a wonderful, kind and gentle person the VICTIM was. The victim that isn’t here to defend himself or his character! Charlie Conners who did NOTHING but get killed for defending a young girl who couldn’t defend herself. He was a good boy. He was a kind boy. He didn’t have an aggressive bone in his body! Share that Capital!”

These two posts were placed by Melissa Rose the mother of Charlie Connors:

Melissa Rose: “My son was sticking up for a female. Shane punched Elena and Charlie started fighting with Shane. He was stabbed multiple times. I do not blame anyone except Shane himself. My son had issues with him for over a year. Shane’s mother tried you help my son after from what I hear, and I am thankful for that. She is a mess I am sure, we both lost our sons last night.”

Melissa Rose “I do not blame Elena. I am heartbroken and have a lot of questions, but she would not of wanted to see my son hurt.”

Dozens of posts were placed on the Facebook page of Melissa Rose along with this one who may be a potential witness for the Anne Arundel States Attorney prosecuting Winemiller:

Damien Omen Doyle  That kid has been threading (threatening) Charlie since the beginning of last year. Me and Matt had to go to the park one day because the kid threatened to bring a bunch of people to jump him

Ellen Mayes Damien – make sure you get word to the detectives so you are deposed. The Prosecutor is building their case and they will need affidavits outlining the history

When one of Melissa Rose’ friend questioned why the Capital Gazette was able to use the photo that she posted of her son on Facebook, Rose provided this response:

  •
  • Melissa Rose Amber Holson  I let them. They got my number at court. I couldn’t think of what to say except Charlie was a good person. Maybe if I said more, they would have more to say about Charlie. The paper is just about what happened at court and we weren’t allowed to speak.

Melissa Rose, of course, I was mad reading the article (in the Gazette) and I talked to the reporter. I just should have told him more before the article. Then again it is written about what happened at court and that is what happened. I just have to wait for trial when our side can talk so they get to know the real Charlie and what really happened.

The Facebook posts on the page of Charlie Connor’s mother Melissa Brown (Rose), reveals anecdotes about Charlie, photos, and videos which give an insight of his short life and the love he had earned from many friends and family.

The obituary of Charlie Connors shows that he was a young man who worked hard, juggling a day job with Rosenberg & Fayne Law Firm located in Riverdale, Md., and also tended bar at the Corner Grille, located not far from his family’s home in Shadyside.  Deale and Shadyside are only a few miles apart and share a common Chesapeake Bay lifestyle and small-town flavor.

Photos and video clips of Charlie’s life reveal a talented and charismatic young man who enjoyed a strong family upbringing and good values, leading him to be the type of man that many of his friends pointed to as a man who would step in to stop another man from assaulting a woman – which is alleged to have taken place in the Happy Harbor when Winemiller assaulted his girlfriend.

Prior Threats Alleged

Others posting on Facebook say that many prior threats had been made against Connor’s life by Winemiller which, if true, certainly will be part of the investigation that will lead to a Grand Jury indictment in the coming months.

The episodes of domestic violence between couples continue to cripple families and leave many women broken, beaten and dead as some men believe they have a right to turn to violence. Connor’s interceding as Winemiller allegedly assaulting his girlfriend may have prevented a young woman from dying at the hands of the man who did kill him.

As the investigation gets underway to bring about indictments and a trial of Winemiller, the fact remains that in a sudden and violent outburst of deadly violence, Charlie Connors is dead and the blame for his death has been laid at the hands of Shane Winemiller.

Connor’s funeral will have six pallbearers carrying his coffin to his grave on March 16th while Winemiller will soon be watching twelve members of a jury deciding how he will spend the rest of his life.

Anne Arundel County Police are urging anyone with information to come forward by calling the Anne Arundel County Homicide Unit at 410-222-4731.

As you all know Charlie tragically lost his life on March 9th. My family and I are still in a state of shock and disbelief. How could our sweet boy be taken from us so young? Our hearts are broken.

Charlie was a son, a grandson, a brother, a nephew, a cousin, a friend… But most of all he was part of the glue that held us all together. Everyone that met him loved him.

Charlie was a quiet boy, sometimes a mystery. He was so smart. He loved his family and friends. He was looked up to by his younger cousins and siblings as he was the oldest. Charlie always had great friends by his side. They all became an extension of our family. We are all truly grateful and blessed to have had him in our lives.

He just turned 21, just getting his life started. Now my family is scrambling trying to figure out our next steps.

Missy and Matt are the first people to help someone in need. Now we are asking for help in return. Missy never planned on being faced with this task of planning a funeral.

We are asking for any help you can provide.
