DIRTBAG ROUNDUP: Mark Brandenberg’s long criminal record spans twenty years and 1200 miles; when attempting to bash his way into a home was slashed by resident armed only by a knife – next time – the victim needs to use a gun

BEL AIR, MD. – Sometimes knives are lethal but still aren’t as good as a shotgun in deterring a burglar. Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler reports that Harford detectives are investigating an attempted burglary that resulted in the wounding of the burglar who attempted to force entry into a residence on March 26, 2020.

On March 25, 2020, at approximately 11:51 p.m., deputies assigned to the Northern Precinct of the Harford County Sheriff’s Department responded to the area of the 1200 block of Athens Court in Bel Air for the report of an attempted burglary. While enroute, deputies were informed the suspect was still attempting to force entry into the residence.

Police say that deputies located Mark David Brandenberg, 38, (DOB 08/11/1981) of 2217 Alabone Road, Bel Air, Md., attempting to gain entry. Brandenberg was found by deputies to be bleeding from apparent knife wounds to the upper body and was tossed in a meatwagon for a ride to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and later transferred to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he is currently listed in stable condition.

The investigation was assumed by detectives from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division. Investigators from the Forensic Services Unit responded to the scene, to collect and preserve physical evidence in support of the investigation.

THE CHESAPEAKE TODAY All Crime All The Time

The initial investigation indicates a resident in the 1200 block of Athens Court, identified as Stephen Brown, 26, was outside his home when he was confronted by Brandenberg, who was staying at a nearby residence. Brandenberg demanded Brown give him money, and when he refused, Brandenberg attempted to follow Brown into his residence.

HOMEOWNER SHOULD HAVE HAD A SHOTGUN, NOT A FROGSTICKER:

Police say that Brown attempted to secure his residence. Brandenberg shattered a glass pane in the front door and attempted to climb through it to enter the residence. Despite several warnings from Brown that he had a kitchen knife, Brandenberg continued his attempt to force entry, when Brown slashed him with the knife.

NEIGHBORS RUSHED TO AID VICTIM OF DIRTBAG BURGLAR

Nearby neighbors responded to help Brown stop Brandenberg from entering the residence. Brown was uninjured.

As a result of the investigation, Brandenberg is being charged in connection to the incident. At this time, the homeowner, Brown, is not expected to face charges in connection to this incident.

Sheriff-Gahler-was-invited-to-speak-on-Fox-and-Friends-about-Montgomery-County-Thin-Blue-Line-flag.

In speaking about the incident, Sheriff Gahler remarked, “even during this time, when our State is faced with a global pandemic, residents of Harford County didn’t hesitate to come to the aid of their neighbor. With all the bad, we have also seen so much good come from this global tragedy. This is just another example of neighbor helping neighbor. Additionally, I want Harford County to know that our deputies have, and will continue to, work tirelessly every day to keep them safe in the face of this pandemic.”

Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call Detective Tammy Burns, with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, at 410-836-5043.

Brandenberg was issued a peace bond to stay away from, not abuse, not contact or come near the residence of the victim with a final hearing set for May 11, 2020, in Harford District Court. As of March 28, 2020, Court records do not yet reflect the latest charges on his arrest for burglary, robbery and home invasion being placed by the Harford Sheriff’s Department.

A prior criminal conviction from Sept. 20, 2018, was reopened.  On March 12, 2019, Brandenberg entered a guilty plea to DUI in Harford County Circuit Court and was sentenced to three years in prison with all but six months suspended. Brandenberg never appeared for trial on Aug. 25, 2011, in Harford County after being charged with DWI and other traffic charges by Harford County Deputy Sheriff G. Hurlock on July 4, 2011.  On Sept. 18, 2018, he requested a jury trial which led to the plea deal. The terms of the probation caused this case to be reopened on March 9, 2020.

Mark David Brandenberg placed a guilty plea to DWI and driving while revoked in Harford County Circuit Court on March 17, 2004, and was sentenced to nine months in the Harford County Jail. Brandenberg picked up his first DWI conviction on June 25, 2001, in Harford District Court following his arrest by Harford County Sheriff Deputy Paul Wilkinson.  The disposition on the guilty plea deal was probation, according to court records.

From the TAMPA BAY TIMES:
Five men were charged with robbery and battery, accused of picking up a hitchhiker, beating him and taking his wallet and cigarettes, deputies say.

The victim, who was not identified in arrest reports, told Citrus County Sheriff’s deputies that one of the men asked him whether he was still alive after he had been hit and kicked repeatedly.

Deputies arrested the five suspects after their vehicle was spotted at the Circle K convenience store at U.S. 19 and Cardinal Street. A credit card with the victim’s name was found nearby, and one of the suspects told an officer that the victim’s wallet was thrown in a retention pond behind the Ramada Inn in Homosassa.

The arrested men are Gilbert Stephen Louke, 20, 1535 S Candice Path; Kenny Lee Durbin, 24, 10200 W Fishbowl Drive; Allen Leroy Strickland, 29, Yulee Drive; Mark David Brandenberg, 19, 6217 S Candice Path; and Joshua David Doud, 19, 10838 W Misty Rose St., all of Homosassa. Each faces a charge of unarmed robbery and felony battery and was being held at the Citrus County Detention Facility on $12,000 bail.

The victim said that the five men had agreed to give him a ride from the Scotty’s hardware store in Crystal River to Homosassa in exchange for $3 in gas money. After handing over the money, they drove off, he told deputies.

The victim said that the vehicle, a pickup truck, returned and he was again offered a ride. He got in back with two of the men, according to the arrest report.

He was told that one of the men in the truck had to pick up some boots at his house and they would need to take a detour, according to arrest papers. Less than a mile east of U.S. 19, the vehicle pulled to the side of the road on Penn Drive.

According to the arrest reports, all five men jumped out of the vehicle, the driver put the victim in a headlock and he was dragged out of the truck. The men then rifled through his backpack and one demanded his wallet, which was in the bag, arrest reports indicate. The wallet and cigarettes were taken after the men beat him, according to the reports.
