Killer had a long record of burglary, domestic violence, illegal gun possession, and assault that resulted in easy plea deals.

UPDATE: St. Mary’s County Sheriff Tim Cameron reports that on September 1, 2020, during a family dispute, the suspect, later identified as Gregory Wayne Arnold Sr., 48, of Callaway, shot the two victims multiple times at a residence located at 22999 Newtowne Neck Road in Leonardtown, Maryland.

Stephen Edward Arnold, 72, of Leonardtown, was transported to an area trauma center for treatment and ultimately succumbed to the injuries sustained in the shooting. Rosalea Denise Arnold, 66, of Leonardtown, was transported to an area trauma center for treatment in critical condition and died several days later.

Arnold was observed by deputies shortly after the shooting operating a vehicle on Route 5 in Mechanicsville, and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The vehicle pursuit continued into Charles County and then back into St. Mary’s County, where Arnold stopped the vehicle in the roadway on Route 234 near the intersection of Route 236.

Son was armed with two handguns; killed himself as the barricade intensified.

Arnold, who was armed with two handguns, refused to exit the vehicle, and a barricade was declared. Members of the Critical Incident Negotiations Team (CINT), and members of the Emergency Services Team (EST) responded to the scene, and negotiators from CINT began negotiating with Arnold in an attempt to peacefully resolve the barricade. Arnold Sr. ultimately sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was transported to an area trauma center for treatment, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Gregory Wayne Arnold Sr., of Lot B-5, Take It Easy Ranch Road, Callaway, Md., was set to face malicious destruction of property charges on Sept. 3, 2020, in St. Mary’s County District Court. The charges were filed by the St. Mary’s States Attorney on behalf of Bruce Chainay. The charges were linked to an incident that took place on April 6, 2020.

Gregory Wayne Arnold had previously lived in an apartment at his parent’s residence as recently as February 7, 2020, when he filed a civil suit against an insurance company.

A peace bond ordering Gregory Arnold to stay away from a victim, their residence, and their workplace was issued on April 18, 2020, marked final on June 23, 2020, and is valid through Oct. 16, 2020.

Assault charges against Gregory Wayne Arnold Jr., (DOB 09/12/1994) were filed on Dec. 31, 2015, in District Court for St. Mary’s by Maryland State Trooper Geyer.  The charges were dropped by St. Mary’s States Attorney Richard Fritz on March 31, 2016.

A domestic violence case was filed against Gregory Wayne Arnold Sr. (DOB 05/24/1972) on September 10, 2012, in St. Mary’s County Circuit Court.

FELON FIRES ON VEHICLE WITH INFANT OVER TRAFFIC DISPUTE: On December 22, 2010, St. Mary’s Sheriff Tim Cameron reported that St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the area of Sassafras Lane and Zack’s Way in Compton, Md, for a reported man with a gun.

Upon their arrival, they made contact with multiple victims who advised they were driving down the road when a citizen stopped them. After being stopped, an argument ensued over a traffic infraction. During the argument, the defendant, Gregory Wayne Arnold, age 38, of Leonardtown, produced an assault rifle and fired shots at the victim’s vehicle. The victims got back into the car and attempted to flee. The defendant continued firing shots at the occupied vehicle while they drove away. The vehicle was occupied by five adults and an infant at the time of the assault. One victim was transported to a local area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Officers responded to the defendant’s residence and detained him without incident.

Detectives with BCI responded and assumed the investigation. During the investigation, a loaded assault rifle and ammunition were recovered. A check of the defendant’s criminal record revealed he is a convicted felon and barred from owning the assault weapon. The defendant was arrested and charged with Assault 1st Degree, Reckless Endangerment, and Illegal Possession of a Regulated Firearm. The defendant remains incarcerated at the St. Mary’s County Detention Center. Additional charges are pending a review with the State’s Attorney’s Office.

On February 17, 2011, Gregory Wayne Arnold Sr. entered a guilty plea to illegal possession of a regulated firearm and reckless endangerment in a plea deal with States Attorney Fritz in St. Mary’s County Circuit Court. THE DEAL: Arnold was sentenced to four years and six months in prison, but the deal allowed for all but one year and six months to be suspended, which allowed for the time to be spent in the St. Mary’s County Jail. A felony assault charge was dropped by Fritz as part of the plea deal.  

When serving time in the St. Mary’s Jail, Gregory Arnold Sr. assaulted a correctional officer, and the charge was put on the Stet Docket by Fritz on March 16, 2011.

Prior charges of burglary were filed in both Calvert and Charles counties against the now-deceased gunman who shot his parents, killing his father, before taking his own life.

LEONARDTOWN, MD. – St. Mary’s Sheriff Tim Cameron reports that on September 1, 2020, at approximately 1:15 p.m., deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Department responded to the 22900 block of Newtowne Neck Road in Leonardtown for the reported shooting.

Deputies arrived on the scene and discovered two victims had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Both victims, a male, age 72, and a female, age 66, of Leonardtown, were transported to area trauma centers for the treatment of the injuries sustained.

A male suspect, age 48 of Callaway, was identified and located by deputies operating a vehicle northbound on Route 5 in Budds Creek, Md.. A vehicle pursuit ensued and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police responded and assisted in the vehicle pursuit. The suspect stopped his vehicle in the roadway in the area of Route 234 and Route 236 in Budds Creek. The armed suspect refused to exit the vehicle, and a barricade was declared.

Sheriff Cameron says that the suspect ultimately sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was transported via helicopter to an area trauma center for treatment.
