WALDORF, MD. – In a case of good police work, the Charles County Sheriff’s Department has landed a Waldorf creep back into the Charles County Jail where he will be held pending trial for the murder of a clerk that he shot to death on his own birthday.

Police Spokeswoman Diane Richardson reports that through an extensive investigation and coordination with the U.S. Marshals Task Force, Gregory DeShawn Collins Jr., 22, of Waldorf, was located and apprehended in Georgia on Monday, October 19, 2020.

Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry reports that Collins has been extradited back from Georgia and is now sitting in the slammer in Charles County awaiting trial for the murder of 7-Eleven clerk Lynn Marie Maher.  Collins is charged with robbing Maher in the 7-Eleven store on Middletown Road on October 1, 2020, and then shooting her to death in cold blood.

Detectives worked closely with Corporal Eric Baker, a Charles County Officer assigned to the U.S. Marshals Task Force, to determine Collins’ location. Due to the tireless efforts by Cpl. Baker, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force, and the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, Collins was apprehended without incident.

Gregory Deshawn Collins, (DOB 10/01/1998) of 6228 Wolverine Place, Waldorf, Md, was held on the thirteen criminal indictments issued by the Charles County Grand Jury on October 27, 2020.

Collins is currently facing criminal charges of malicious property destruction and malicious property destruction which were filed by Charles County Officer T. Thayer on December 2, 2019, in Charles County District Court.

Collins was released from jail on September 7, 2020, and three weeks later decided to commit robbery and murder, according to police.

Charles County States Attorney Tony Covington gave Collins an easy break on August 15, 2019 when he agreed to a plea deal on robbery, theft and assault charges.  In return for Collins pleading guilty to theft and assault charges, both of which are misdemeanors, Covington dropped the felony robbery charges. THE DEAL: Collins was sentenced to three years in prison with all but 14 days suspended, which enabled Collins to continue to pursue a life of crime.
