Virginia State Police Trooper & a Convenience Store Clerk Render Life-Saving Aid to Norfolk Resident

On Monday, March 8, 2021, at approximately 6:18 a.m., a Virginia State Police Trooper was pulling into a convenience store parking lot in the 7500 block of Tidewater Drive, when he observed a man lying on the ground in front of the store completely unresponsive.

The trooper immediately went to the man’s side, did a preliminary health assessment, and requested EMS to respond.

While waiting for the ambulance, the trooper recovered his medical bag from his patrol car and began to perform CPR on the gentleman. A convenience store employee came out and assisted with the chest compressions. The trooper also administered a dose of NARCAN which helped the man regain a pulse and begin breathing on his own.

EMS arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and transported the gentleman to the hospital for further medical treatment.

As of July 1, 2018, all sworn Virginia State Police personnel through the rank of first sergeant were trained and equipped to quickly respond to dangerous opioid exposure and overdose emergencies.

Through a grant administered by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS), state police purchased more than 2,100 NARCAN® dispensers for troopers, special agents, sergeants, and first sergeants across the Commonwealth.
