LEONARDTOWN, MD. – St. Mary’s County Commissioner President Randy Guy confirmed to THE CHESAPEAKE TODAY that he filed on October 4, 2021, for a third term as commissioner president. The Republican from Clements first ran for commissioner in 2010 on a ticket with incumbent commissioner Larry Jarboe (R. Golden Beach) and Danny Morris. Jarboe and Morris were elected that year.  That election marked the third consecutive term for Jarboe who was also elected in 1994 to a four-year term, making him the only person elected in modern history to four terms as a commissioner in St. Mary’s.

Morris chose not to run for reelection in 2014 and was followed in the Hollywood-Leonardtown district by Republican Mike Hewitt.

2014 WAS NOT A GOOD YEAR FOR DEMOCRATS – Sen. Roy Dyson, Del John Bohanan, and Commissioner President Jackie Russell all went down to defeat in St. Mary’s County as voters got tired of the same old tax and spend policies. THE CHESAPEAKE TODAY photo

Commissioner President Guy won in 2014 over incumbent Democrat Jackie Russell of Saint Georges Island and won in 2018 over Democrat Howard Thompson.

Commissioner Guy said that former three-term Commissioner Dan Raley (D. Lexington Park) gave him a pre-filing boost at the annual Osprey Gala on October 1, 2021, held at Colton’s Point which caused Commissioner John O’Conner (R. Mechanicsville) to go on a bender on Facebook, attacking Guy for filing for reelection.  Raley was acting as the auctioneer for the Gala when he announced that Guy told him he was planning to file for another term.

O’Conner has previously filed for the commissioner president seat instead of running for another term in his present district composed of the north end of St. Mary’s County.

Commissioner President Guy is an Air Force veteran, operated a small business for twenty years following his retirement, and is a native of Ridge, Maryland where his family operated a country store and tavern for many years. His father, Mockie Guy, was elected to the Democratic Central Committee as was Randy Guy where he served two terms.  Guy is married to Carolyn Guy who recently retired from service with the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.

St.  Mary’s Commissioner Mike Hewitt was believed to be interested in running for Commissioner President should Guy not run again and now will likely face opposition for a possible run for a third term from the Hollywood – Leonardtown District.
