MURDER USA: PG Police charged Markell Lewis with the Christmas Eve road rage murder of boxer Danny Kelly Jr. as he drove his family to a Christmas dinner celebration in Temple Hills

Road Rage Murderer Markell Lewis Sentenced

A Clinton man has been sentenced to 80 years in prison on July 20th.

Markell Lewis, 27, shot and killed Danny Kelly, Jr., 30, a professional boxer on Christmas Eve of 2021. The two were driving on St. Barnabas Road in Temple Hills when Lewis abruptly changed lanes in front of Kelly. Shortly after, Lewis shot and killed Kelly, leaving his three children and fiancé in shock. The family was headed to a Christmas Eve dinner.

In sentencing Lewis, the judge went above the guidelines citing the egregious nature of the murder. He was sentenced to 40 years, suspend all but 35 on second-degree murder, ten years for four 1st-degree assault counts, and five years for use of a firearm by someone who a prior crime has disqualified.

“Mr. Lewis callously killed Mr. Kelly because he was angry, which is ridiculous. This family was on the way to Christmas Eve dinner and didn’t deserve to see Mr. Kelly die and experience this tragedy. It was terrible and senseless,” said State’s Attorney Braveboy. “The judge considered the crime and, I think, observed the defendant’s demeanor during the trial in determining that it was necessary to go above the guidelines, and we are grateful for that. Justice was served for Mr. Kelly. I also want to thank the Assistant State’s Attorneys Ed Leyden and Victoria Adegoke.”

Lewis was convicted on April 7, 2023.

The Prince Georges Police announced on January 14, 2022, that the Homicide Unit identified and arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting in Temple Hills on Christmas Eve. The suspect is 25-year-old Markell Lewis of Clinton. He’s charged with the murder of 30-year-old Danny Kelly Jr. of Clinton.

On December 24, 2021, at approximately 4:40 pm, patrol officers were called to the 4400 block of St. Barnabas Road. They discovered Kelly unresponsive in the driver’s seat of his vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead a short time later. The preliminary investigation revealed Kelly, his girlfriend, and his three children were heading northbound on St. Barnabas Road.

Police say that an SUV pulled up next to Kelly’s pickup truck and an occupant opened fire. No one else in Kelly’s truck was injured. The suspect vehicle was later identified to be a dark blue GMC Envoy.

Through various investigative techniques, Homicide Unit detectives identified the GMC Envoy used in the crime. Lewis’ family member is the SUV’s registered owner. After identifying the vehicle and Lewis, detectives learned that on December 27, 2021, PGPD officers arrested Lewis on St. Barnabas Road for felon in possession of a gun. The gun recovered during that arrest was subsequently linked to the murder of Kelly. Officers arrested Lewis on Thursday at his home in Clinton. PGPD detectives continue to search for the GMC Envoy.
