Dominique Lamarr Lewis, 25, of Hampton, Virginia, is charged with two counts of attempted first and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Statement from Chief of Police Jason Lando:

“Friday afternoon I received the call that no law enforcement agency leader ever wants to receive. Two of our officers were shot by a suspect while responding to a call for a suspicious person. Watching helicopters lift off from the scene with our cops inside was the toughest thing I have witnessed in a long time. Yesterday evening, however, our collective prayers were answered. Both officers were released from the hospital. I am so thankful that both are going to make a full recovery.

This incident remains under investigation by the Maryland State Police, and the Frederick Police Department will fully respect and cooperate with that investigation. At the same time, we have been overwhelmed by the support for our agency and for Officers Kowalsky and Snyder. The words of encouragement, support and prayers have come from literally all over the country, and we cannot express how much they mean to us. It is a difficult time for police officers right now, and the challenges we face are immense, but knowing we have so much support continues to be our driving force in our mission to protect and serve.

To all of our public safety brothers and sisters, community leaders, and each and every individual who reached out, we thank you. We have received so many offers of support during this time. We will update our social media channels with any needs that may arise for our officers and how anyone who wants to help can do so.

Yesterday’s tragic incident occurred during what we often refer to as a routine call for service. Our officers respond to these types of calls every day, knowing that at any moment, it could be their own lives on the line. Yesterday was that moment for Kristen and Bryan. They are, undoubtedly, heroes. What makes them heroes is not only what happened to them yesterday, but the fact that, once they heal, they will be right back out there protecting and serving their community. For that we owe them, and all of our officers, our deepest gratitude.”
