NEW MARKET, MD. – Tucked away off of the busy Maryland Rt. 5 at New Market, Maryland, in northern St. Mary’s County, right across from the regional library at the Rt. 6 intersection was a branch of the County First Bank. County First was acquired by Community Bank of the Chesapeake several years ago. Since Community Bank of the Chesapeake operated a branch just a mile away in Charlotte Hall, the New Market branch was unneeded and closed.
Prior to the closing of this branch, one day, John White, Chairman of the international marketing firm, known as Compass Marketing, drove to the County First branch in New Market and entered the bank. John White showed his identification to the branch officials and asked to see his company account. White says that the officials did not see his name on the account and thus could not disclose the information. The account was opened by John White’s brothers, Deputy States Attorney Daniel White, and Orphans Court Judge Michael White.
The address on the account was listed as the home address of Michael White in nearby Golden Beach, instead of at the company offices in Annapolis, where Michael White worked full time as the chief financial officer of Compass Marketing. Judge Michael White also attended monthly meetings of the St. Mary’s Orphans Court once the Register of Wills prepared cases for the judges to rubber stamp and approve.
How did John White come to learn of the secret account opened in the name of his company? An insurance company contacted his staff in his office to update the information on his life insurance policy, a policy for millions of dollars. John White told his assistant to forward a copy of the policy to him as he didn’t believe such a policy existed. It did. The discovery of the policy led to the discovery of the bank account which was used to pay for the policy. Eventually, access to the account was given to John White and an examination of the account led to the discovery of millions of dollars allegedly stolen from Compass Marketing by Daniel White and Michael White.
What do embezzlers typically do with their purloined funds? Typically, they buy cars. Lots of cars. They put family members on the payroll as ghost employees. They buy jewelry. They obtain mistresses. They often buy beach houses.

This Episode of Lies of Our Lives examines the details of the purchase of a beach house on the Atlantic Ocean in Dare County, North Carolina by Michael White.
Michael White made arrangements to buy an oceanfront home located at the Sandhills subdivision in Duck identified as Lot 13b and also as 165 B Buffell Head Road. The mailing address for the tax bill is the same as that that Michael White gave County First Bank when he opened the company account that his brother the Chairman had no knowledge, and which was used to open a secret multi-million-dollar insurance policy on the life of his brother. To have the funds for the purchase of the property, two of the largest checks on the secret bank account which Michael White was allegedly using to steal millions of dollars from Compass Marketing, he wrote two checks for $450,000.00 to himself from the account. The first was on February 11, 2016, the second was on March 4, 2016.
Dare County land records show that Michael R. White went to settlement and completed the purchase of the beach house property on the Atlantic Ocean from Yates LLC on July 14, 2016, in the amount of $975,000.00.
The house and land have 73 feet of frontage on the ocean and tax records show the 2021 values as $665,000.00 for the building and $810,000.00 for the land.
