Charles Balsbaugh, St. Mary’s County Sheriff Jail.

CHARLES PATRICK BALSBAUGH, of 25210 Secretariat Drive, Hollywood, Md., was charged with possessing drugs (Not Pot) on November 8, 2022, by Maryland State Trooper J. Barlow. On Feb. 23, 2023, Balsbaugh entered a plea of guilty in a plea deal with St. Mary’s States Attorney Jaymi Sterling. THE DEAL: Balsbaugh was sentenced to 60 days in jail, with all 60 days suspended.

On September 10, 2021, Balsbaugh entered a guilty plea to eluding a police vehicle by failing to stop when charged by Maryland Trooper Posch.  In a plea deal with St. Mary’s States Attorney Richard Fritz, Balsbaugh was given a verdict of Probation Before Judgement and one year of unsupervised probation. David Chapman acted as attorney for Balsbaugh.

Balsbaugh entered guilty pleas to criminal indictments for burglary, malicious property destruction, and theft in St. Mary’s Circuit Court on August 14, 2015, in a plea deal with St. Mary’s States Attorney Richard Fritz. THE DEAL: a jail sentence of three years with all but two years and six months suspended so Balsbaugh could avoid the Maryland prison system and serve the sentence in the St. Mary’s Jail. David Chapman of LaPlata was the attorney for Balsbaugh.

ASSAULT – On August 22, 2014, St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Department Deputy Steinbach responded to Abell’s Tavern, located in Callaway, for a reported assault. Charles Patrick Balsbaugh, 28, of Valley Lee, assaulted two female victims and one male victim during an argument inside the bar. Balsbaugh was located and placed under arrest. He was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and charged with 3 COUNTS of 2nd Degree Assault.


LUKE EDWARD CANTER, of 40321 Duke Street, Mechanicsville, Md., was charged on October 31, 2022, by Maryland State Trooper C. Holder with violating a protective order issued by a Judge in a case of domestic violence.  Maryland State Trooper Louderback charged Canter with violating a protective order on December 17, 2022.

Assault- On September 14, 2022, St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Department DFC. Fenwick responded to the 40300 block of Duke Street in Leonardtown for the reported assault.  The deputy reported that Luke Edward Canter, 63, of Mechanicsville, assaulted the victim leaving visible injuries to the victim’s back. Canter was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree.


On February 23, 2023, Canter entered a guilty plea to a violation of protective order in a plea deal with St. Mary’s States Attorney Jaymi Sterling. THE DEAL: in return for his plea deal Canter was given a sentence of 90 days in jail with 89 days suspended, along with two years of probation. Attorney Cynthia Panos entered her appearance for Canter one day before the trial.  In the charge from December, Canter also entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to 90 days in jail.

District Court Judge Robert B. Riddle ordered a final order on January 18, 2023, against Luke Cantor, ordering him to stay away from Gregory A Bennett Jr., Michael L. Dean & Cheneeta Adams-Dean, not contact, not abuse, and surrender firearms.

SCOTT NATHANIEL BROWN, of 22520 Tara Lane, Great Mills, Md., was charged with DWI by Maryland State Trooper Jonathan Powis on August 1, 2022, at 12:36 am on FDR Blvd at Rt. 237 in California, Md. This case was postponed on February 23, 2022, to March 9, 2023.

CULLEN KENNETH BONNEL (DOB 12/20/1995) of 41900 Gibson Drive, Mechanicsville, Md., was arrested by Maryland State Trooper Posch on May 1, 2022, for DUI-Alcohol, failure to obey traffic control device, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving in wanton and willful disregard for the safety of persons and property, negligent driving. A hearing in Drug Court for St. Mary’s Circuit Court was held on Feb. 23, 2023. Bonnel’s attorney Kevin J. McDevitt of Leonardtown, requested a trial with a jury and has been set on the calendar for St. Mary’s Circuit Court for March 20, 2023.


KEYSHON MARQUEZ GANT, (DOB 07/22/2000), OF 45741 Oregon Way, Lexington Park, Md., was charged by St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Department Deputy Andrew Burgess with possession of a concealed deadly weapon, handgun on his person, and possession of a detached magazine holding over ten rounds. 


On Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, detectives received information that Gant was in possession of a black colored semiautomatic handgun that was concealed in his front waistband as he was walking in the Patuxent Homes neighborhood in Lexington Park. Members of the Criminal Investigations Division responded to the area and located Gant walking on Midway Drive, where he was detained without incident. A loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun with an extended magazine was found concealed in Gant’s waistband. A ghost gun does not have a serial number or any identifying information. The extended magazine had a 30-round capacity and contained a total of 30 rounds, with one round in the chamber of the firearm. District Court Judge James Tanavage ordered Gant held in the St. Mary’s Jail without bond on February 23, 2023.  The next court hearing for Gant is set for April 14, 2023.


WHITNEY ERIN MCMILLAN, (DOB 2/4/1990) of 45582 Pleasant Mill Road, Great Mills, Md., was arrested by Maryland State Trooper B. Messick after stopping her on September 26, 2022, as she operated a 2013 Dodge Journey at the intersection of Saratoga Drive and Essex Drive in Lexington Park at 5:22 pm, charging her with driving without a drivers permit.  McMillan entered a guilty plea in a plea deal with St. Mary’s States Attorney Jaymi Sterling on February 23, 2023. THE DEAL: McMillan was given a verdict of Probation Before Judgement and ten days in jail with all of the jail time suspended, along with probation for one year.


JASON WILLIAMS WILEY, (DOB 11/10/1987) of 49437 Portney’s Overlook Road, Ridge, Md., was arrested by St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Department Deputy M. Chase-Johnson for second-degree assault.  Burglary/Assault- On December 7, 2022, Cpl. Teague responded to the 21300 block of Chancellors Run Road in Great Mills for the reported burglary in progress.  Jason Williams Wiley, 35, of Ridge, forced his way into the victim’s residence and assaulted the victim. Wiley fled the scene prior to police arrival and was located hiding near the residence in the woods. Located on Wiley at the time of his arrest were suspected Suboxone strips. Wiley was arrested and charged with Burglary 3rd and 4th Degree, Assault 2nd Degree, and CDS: Possession-not Marijuana. Wiley entered a guilty plea in a plea deal in St. Mary’s District Court with St. Mary’s States Attorney Jaymi Sterling on February 23, 2023. The charges from December 7, 2022, of third and fourth-degree burglary, second-degree assault, and possession of drugs (not pot) were all dropped as part of the plea deal and approved by District Court Judge Tanavage. THE DEAL: Wiley was given a sentence of one year in jail with all but thirty-nine days suspended.
