LAPLATA, MD. – According to Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry, on February 17, 2023, at 7:20 p.m., an officer in a marked patrol car was entering the crossover on Crain Highway at Bel Alton Newtown Road when the driver of a 2003 Chevrolet 2500 pick-up truck drove across Crain Highway from Bel Alton Newtown Road and struck the officer’s car, totaling it.

The driver fled. A lookout was broadcast, and responding officers canvassed the area. The Maryland Transportation Authority Police assisted and located the truck in the Clifton area, approximately 6 miles away from the crash site. The driver, Sydney William Robertson, 20 (DOB 2/2/2003), of 10250 Blacklock Farm Place, La Plata, Md. The crash scene was not far from his residence.

Police say that their investigation revealed Robertson was impaired. Robertson was arrested by Charles County Sheriff’s Officer Travis Yates, and charged with driving while impaired, fleeing the scene of a motor vehicle crash, and other related charges.

Neither the officer nor the suspect was injured. According to court records, on February 17, 2023, District Court Commissioner Talia Thomas released Robertson from the Charles County Jail on personal recognizance. Noted DUI attorney Hammad Shaikh Matin of LaPlata is listed on court records as the attorney for Robertson. A trial is set in Charles County District Court on April 5, 2023.
