DOMESTIC ABUSE CASE CLOSED: WOMAN FLED FROM BEATING IN THE WEE HOURS AND FOUND A HERO OUT WALKING HIS DOG WHO WAS PACKING HEAT AND PROVIDED A FATAL DOSE OF LEAD POISONING TO THE ASSAILANT
Detectives Investigating Shooting Death
BRYANS ROAD, MD – Whupping up on a woman turned out to be a fatal mistake for a Bryans Road man when he confronted a man who tried to protect the woman being assaulted and was given lead poisoning as the man protected her and himself from the assault — as reported by witnesses to police.
Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry reports that on May 8, 2023, at approximately 3:30 a.m., officers responded to the 2900 block of Sedgemore Place in Bryans Road, MD, for the report of a domestic assault in progress.
Before arrival, Charles County Sheriff’s Department officers received a report of the sound of gunshots in the same area.
THE SOUND OF GUNFIRE
When officers arrived, they located an adult male near the intersection of Sedgemore Place and Matthews Road with gunshot wounds. The officers rendered first aid until paramedics arrived, and the male was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Sheriff Berry reports that the dead man has been identified as Carl Francis Braxton, 30, of Bryans Road.
According to witnesses, Braxton approached and threatened to harm the man. Braxton continued walking aggressively toward the man, at which time the man, who has a permit to carry a firearm, produced a gun and shot Braxton.

A preliminary investigation revealed Braxton was reported to have assaulted his girlfriend inside their townhouse. The woman was able to flee and encountered a man who was walking his dog. According to witnesses, Braxton approached and threatened to harm the man. Braxton continued walking aggressively toward the man, at which time the man, who has a permit to carry a firearm, produced a gun and shot Braxton.
The man remained on the scene until officers arrived. He was transported to a police station and subsequently released pending further investigation. At this time, there is no indication any of the involved subjects were known to the man.
Detectives are consulting with the Charles County State’s Attorney’s Office, and the investigation is ongoing. BRAXTON WAS CITED FOR HOT ROD SPEEDING ON RT. 210, NEGLIGENT DRIVING AND FAILING TO HAVE TAGS OR REGISTRATION ON A PORSCHE
Carl Francis Braxton was cited for numerous traffic violations in Prince George’s County on June 4, 2022, by Prince George’s Police Officer Knight, including operating a 2013 Porsche at 89 mph in a 55-mph speed zone on Indian Head Highway at Accokeek. Court records show that Braxton failed to pay the fine of $290 and was suspended from driving in Maryland. Citations were also issued for driving a vehicle on public highways with unpaid registration fees with a fine of $290, and another for negligent driving in a careless and imprudent manner endangering the property and lives of others with a fine of $240.
A search of District of Columbia and Maryland court records did not reveal any criminal charges or convictions of Braxton for assault or domestic violence.
