Austin Winbush Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Attempted First-Degree Murder in 2021 Lexington Park Shooting

LEONARDTOWN, MD – St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling reports that Austin Dylan Winbush, 24 (DOB 7/1/1999) of 607 Opus Avenue, Capitol Heights, Maryland, was sentenced to life suspended all but 25 years of active incarceration in prison for attempted first-degree murder.

Following a three-day jury trial, a St. Mary’s County jury convicted Winbush on March 23, 2023, of attempted first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence and having a loaded handgun. The charges stemmed from a May 5, 2021, shooting that took place in Lexington Park, MD.

Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Jeff Maylor, Chief of the Major Crimes Unit, prosecuted the case on behalf of the citizens of St. Mary’s County. St. Mary’s Circuit Court Judge Amy D. Lorenzini presided over the case.

  • On 6/15/2021, Austin Dylan Winbush, 21, of Capitol Heights, MD, was arrested by Maryland State Police Cpl. S. Barlow for FTA-Driving while License Suspended.
  • Assault- On September 24, 2021, St. Mary’s Sheriff’s Department Dep. Gardiner responded to the St. Mary’s County Jail in Leonardtown for the reported assault. Sheriff Tim Cameron reported that the investigation determined Austin Dylan Winbush, 22, of Capitol Heights, assaulted the victim by pushing the victim to the ground and hitting the victim several times. Winbush was charged with Assault 2nd Degree.
  • On 7/17/2021, Austin Dylan Winbush, 21, of Capitol Heights, MD, was arrested by Maryland State Police M/Tpr J. Preston for Fraud-Person Identity to Avoid Prosecution.
  • Austin Dylan Winbush, 21, of Capitol Heights, was arrested by the St. Mary’s Sheriff Youth Violence Task Force for Failure to Appear/Driving While Suspended.
