DWI HIT PARADE: Haas’s great slow-speed chase ended in slammer with a long list of impaired and drug charges in Queen Anne’s County

THE QUEEN ANNE’S COUNTY OFFICE OF THE SHERIFF REPORTS:

On December 26, 2024, at approximately 3:36 PM, Deputy Johnson responded to a “Be On the Lookout” (BOLO) alert from Maryland State Police regarding a suspicious and possibly impaired driver in the Pine Ridge Community of Church Hill, MD.

Deputy Johnson located a vehicle matching the BOLO description and initiated contact with the driver, later identified as James Haas, 42, of Rock Hall, MD, and a passenger. Signs of impairment were observed in Haas, who refused commands to exit the vehicle. Meanwhile, the passenger attempted to walk away from the scene despite commands to stop.

Deputy Johnson attempted to detain Haas; however, Haas drove off, re-entering the roadway and running over a toy slide, which became lodged underneath his vehicle. Stop sticks were deployed to prevent further flight, and additional deputies arrived on the scene.

A pursuit was authorized, with Haas traveling at approximately 24mph. He navigated through the Pine Ridge Community, driving through a soccer field before re-entering the roadway, as well as driving on the shoulder and repeatedly crossing the double yellow center line. During the pursuit, Haas was observed continuing to smoke from the glass pipe.

The chase concluded in the 400 block of Hall Road when Haas exited the roadway into the grass. Deputies observed him smashing the glass pipe on the vehicle’s center console before taking him into custody.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a white, rock-like substance under the driver’s seat, a broken glass smoking device with burnt steel wool, and a black tube containing a white powdery substance, suspected to be Fentanyl.

Following the incident, Dispatch received multiple calls from community members reporting that an individual matching the passenger’s description had discarded unknown objects in the bushes near the site where the initial traffic stop occurred.

Deputies recovered 22 blue wax folds and 21 clear plastic bags containing suspected Fentanyl, a clear bag with suspected crack cocaine, and various items of drug paraphernalia. Charges against the passenger are pending further investigation.
