MURDER USA: Jazmiah Nelson joyriding in an illegal race through townhouse community on 4-wheeler shot dead, another outlaw racer injured when gunfire ended late-night hell-ride

LA PLATA, MD. – Murder happens in new and unusual ways when the lawless go for a joyride in Charles County as when three people decided to take a 4-wheeler for a joyride in a neighborhood of townhouses where children play and speeding off-road vehicles can be a flashpoint of danger.

Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry reports that on May 22, 2021, at 11:36 p.m., officers responded to the 600 block of Pomonkey Way in La Plata for the report of a shooting.

Police say that a preliminary investigation revealed the victim, Jazmiah Zyri Nelson, 18, of La Plata, was on a four-wheeler with two acquaintances when someone fired a gun toward them as they were riding in the area of the townhomes.

The operation of off-road vehicles on public highways is illegal and the frequent use of gangs of illegal street racers in the region has been a constant challenge for law enforcement. In 2007, dozens of dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles went on joy rides through National Harbor in swarms of up to one hundred.  The outlaw bikers drove their vehicles up on pedestrian walkways and fled from police. Helicopters have been used to track them. The possibility of a resident of the neighborhood where Nelson and her colleagues were racing pulling out a gun and firing towards them is one that police will surely investigate and be looking for camera footage.

Nelson was struck in the upper body and flown to Baltimore Shock Trauma where she was pronounced deceased several hours later. A second female was grazed by a bullet; she was treated for her injury and released. Detectives are pursuing leads; this does not appear to be a random shooting.

Jazmiah Zyri Nelson, of 5 Oakside Lane, in Indian Head, Md., was born to Crystal Penkney and Rico Nelson of Waldorf on June 20, 2002, at Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

Nelson was no stranger to high-speed travel or fast living. On Nov. 9, 2020, at 2:00 am, she was charged by Maryland State Trooper Galgan with operating a 2015 Elantra at 81 mph in a posted 45 mph speed zone on U.S. Rt. 301 south of the VFW Post in La Plata.  A fine of $290 was assessed and unpaid resulting in her driver’s permit being suspended. On May 12, 2021, Nelson picked up another speeding ticket on Rt. 5, along with a citation for failing to have a child under the age of eight properly secured in her vehicle.

Nelson filed a court action against Antone Coleman of White Plains, Md., for custody of a child in 2019 with the end result that the case was dismissed due to a lack of jurisdiction.  Charles County Sheriff’s Detectives arrested Coleman for allegedly being part of a three-man crew in a home invasion.

INDIAN HEAD, MD. – Charles County Sheriff Troy Berry reports that his detectives have made three arrests in connection with an armed robbery that left a resident stabbed by the suspects multiple times.

The caller advised two males broke into the house armed with a rifle, handgun, and knife and demanded money and property.

On November 8, 2019, at 1 a.m., officers responded to the 3300 block of Stump Neck Road in Indian Head for the report of a home invasion and stabbing. The caller advised two males broke into the house armed with a rifle, handgun, and knife and demanded money and property.

The suspects, Johnathan Spencer Phillips, 18, (DOB 12/22/2000) of 2856 St. Peters Church Road, Waldorf; Daquan Isaiah Skinner, 18 of Washington, D.C.; and Antone Jacoby Coleman, 18, no fixed address, were arrested and charged with

  • attempted murder,
  • first-degree assault,
  • armed robbery,
  • home invasion and other related charges.

The victim of the stabbing was flown to a hospital in stable condition. Detectives assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division continued the investigation and determined the robbery was not random.

Sheriff Berry reports that during the robbery, a 47-year-old resident was stabbed several times and the suspects fled with the victims’ property and stole the victims’ car. As patrol officers responded, they observed a vehicle and conducted a traffic stop of the stolen car, they approached the car, they observed the stolen property and other evidence linking the occupants to the case.

In Charles County Circuit Court on July 22, 2020, Antone Jacoby Coleman entered a guilty plea to felony armed robbery and felony home invasion in a plea deal between his attorneys, Robert Bonsib and Hammad Matin and Charles County States Attorney Tony Covington.  THE DEAL: In return for a guilty plea, Coleman was sentenced to 25 years on one count and 20 years on the other with all the prison time, but ten years suspended. The two sentences are to be served consecutively.

With Coleman (DOB 3/11/2001) currently incarcerated at the Roxbury Correctional Institution in Hagerstown, Maryland, he is good for having an alibi in this murder leaving the child fathered by him without either a mom or a dad around to raise her, pay for her upbringing or send her off to school.

Daquan Isaiah Skinner of 3533 EAST CAPITOL ST., SE #102, Washington, D.C. is serving a long stretch in the Maryland prison at Revell’s Neck Road in Westover, Md., on the Eastern Shore where lots of ruthless killers and thugs from the City of Baltimore are housed.  Skinner entered guilty pleas to home invasion and felony use of a firearm to commit a crime. Skinner was sentenced to twenty-five years in prison for home invasion with the entire sentence suspended in a plea deal on July 22, 2020, with States Attorney Covington. The deal called for Skinner to be sentenced to twenty years for the use of a firearm with all but ten years suspended. His start date in prison was set at the time when he was first jailed on November 9, 2021.

Johnathan Spencer Phillips, who was 18 when he exercised his free will and embarked upon a life of crime is now an inmate in the Maryland Prison System at Jessup.  His inmate ID is 00480730. Phillips (DOB (11/9/2000) also arranged a plea deal with prosecutors and entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit armed robbery. THE DEAL: Phillips was sentenced to 20 years in prison with all but four years suspended.   Each of the thugs was ordered to pay $4,478.18 to the victim and $7,248.56 to State Farm Insurance Company.
