Mobster Albert Anastasia is murdered at a barbershop in 1957

Originally published by the Daily News on October 26, 1957. This story was written by Anthony Marino and Sidney Kline.)

Albert Anastasia, 55, burly, beetling Lord High Executioner of the old Murder Inc. mob, was shot to death yesterday by hired killers of his own kind in the Park Sheraton Hotel, Seventh Ave. and 55th St. he thus met a fate he feared and one he earnestly hoped would not be the lot of his family.

Professional gunmen, who fired 10 bullets and hit their man with five of them, took his life in the same hotel, then called the Park Central, in which gambler Arnold Rothstein was slain a generation ago.

Why? Those who should know said it was because Anastasia ordered the shooting of gambling czar Frank Costello last May 2. With the bungling of that assassination attempt, these underworld intimates said, Anastasia knew that his own life was forfeit.

The killing was reminiscent of the Mafia slayings of an earlier era, when slayers left a Black Hand impression on paper somewhere on their victim’s body. Anastasia’s killers, in a modern version perhaps, each wore a black glove on his trigger hand. More than his own death, Anastasia dreaded that his wife and his son, Albert Jr., 22, might be killed in revenge for the attack on Costello, a good friend of Anastasia told THE NEWS.

That friend said that Anastasia ordered Costello killed because Costello was seeking a bigger share of the take in the policy racket and bigtime dice games that Anastasia was running.

And, said the same source, Anastasia increased the number of his own bodyguards from one to three and put guards over his wife and son after Costello escaped with a scalp wound when shot in the foyer of his apartment house at 115 Central Park West last May.

To Quiz “Everybody”

Asked whether Costello would be questioned about the killing, Deputy Chief Inspector Edward Byrnes said last night: “We’re going to question everybody.”

The NEWS source said he met Anastasia at the Jamaica Racetrack only last Saturday.

“You look tired, Al,” the friend recalled saying. “What’s the matter?”

Anastasia, indeed, did look worn, worried and years older than six months earlier, the friend reported. MORE
