LEONARDTOWN, MD. – In the school system where several Leonardtown High School students threatened to bring guns accessible to them at their home to school to kill others and a Great Mills High School student brought his father’s gun to school and killed a girl who dumped him, the school system has now evolved to a big-brother surveillance embedded in the computers provided to students to keep track of all the nutcases in the school system.
St. Mary’s School system security director Mike Wyant, along with St. Mary’s Deputy Sara Smith, reported to the St. Mary’s School Board at the May 26, 2021, meeting about an incident that took place.
The school system has installed Gaggle software in each of the computers provided to students which allows authorities to monitor the use of the computers by students at home twenty-four hours a day. The Gaggle will send an alert to the school system and to the Sheriff’s Department when certain items, rumors, threats, and language triggers the software. The software monitors the use of the computer and students email accounts.
“We had a little concern about two weekends ago, that Sara and I spent most of our weekend on. This is a threat response, protocol update, lots of things have happened.”
“The Department of Safety and Security has implemented a 24 hour on call procedure for assigned staff to monitor the SMCPS Safe Schools alert tipline, our new Gaggle software for monitoring student accounts, and any other communications representing a potential threat to our schools,” said Wyant at the school board meeting.
Wyant said that the Gaggle software has substantially helped officials monitor the use of student’s computers for threats and contribute to the safety of the public schools.
Deputy Smith explained to the school board that with the computer monitoring devices listening to the use of students on computers and the tipline they are able to immediately take action and send deputies to the home of a student to begin an investigation even on a weekend.
“As soon as it reaches a level of a threat of violence to others or to self, we are able to reach out. We don’t have to wait until Monday morning any longer,” said Deputy Smith. “We are able to get officers out right away and knock on doors and establish a threat assessment.”
Will the Gaggle alarm use special emojis to ring the insanity bell?
