Marxist Wes Moore Halts Blueprint In Order To Find More Plunder from Taxpayers

Governor Wes Moore recently announced plans to pause key parts of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, a disastrous education spending plan doomed from the beginning. Now, the state is staring down a massive $2.7 billion deficit for next year, and it will only get worse—ballooning to nearly $6 billion over the next five years. This is precisely what fiscal conservatives have warned about for years: the Blueprint is reckless, unaffordable, and a complete disaster for Maryland taxpayers.

The Blueprint, pushed through by Democrats in 2020, was sold as some big, bold solution for public education. It promised sweeping reforms—pay raises for teachers, more time for professional development—but no one ever stopped to ask: Who’s going to pay for this? The truth is, it was never about the students.

It was about pleasing the teachers’ unions, the driving force behind this plan. The unions saw a massive payday for their members and used their political muscle to get Democrats to rubber-stamp the bill. And let’s be clear: Democrats didn’t ask the hard questions. They didn’t care what it cost. They cared about keeping their union backers happy.

At the time, Governor Larry Hogan vetoed the Blueprint, and he was right. He said it lacked a dedicated funding source, and it did. He said it would crush the state’s finances, and it has. But what did the Democrats do? They overrode his veto and ignored all the warnings, and now the state is on the hook for billions of dollars we don’t have.

House Minority Whip Del. Jesse T. Pippy summed it up perfectly when he said, “We haven’t seen a budget deficit like this since the Great Recession.” He’s right. We are heading straight for a fiscal disaster, and this blueprint is the main reason. At the recent Maryland Association of Counties winter conference, Pippy didn’t hold back, saying the combination of rising energy costs, inflation, and reckless spending is making Maryland “simply unaffordable.” Hardworking taxpayers are paying the price for bad decisions made by their elected leaders.

Counties across the state are feeling the pain, too. They’re being forced to absorb the costs of the Blueprint at a time when their budgets are stretched thin. Senate Minority Leader Stephen Hershey hit the nail when he said the state can’t afford parts of this plan. He’s right—it’s time to admit the truth and start scaling this back.

Meanwhile, Democrats are still dragging their feet. House Majority Leader David Moon said they have a “very high bar” for changing the Blueprint. Translation: they still don’t want to fix it. They don’t want to upset the unions that helped put them in office. And while Governor Moore says he doesn’t favor cuts alone and wants to make Maryland more “business-friendly,” he hasn’t offered any real solutions yet.

This entire situation is a textbook example of failed leadership. The Blueprint was never about responsible governance or improving education. It was about Democrats paying back the unions that fund their campaigns. The bill has come due, and Maryland taxpayers are holding the bag.

Governor Moore’s decision to pause parts of the plan is too little, too late. The damage has already been done. The Blueprint is proving to be a complete disaster for Maryland’s economy and a slap in the face to hardworking families. Democrats have spent years ignoring the warnings from Republicans and fiscal conservatives, and now the consequences are staring us in the face.

If lawmakers don’t have the guts to scale back the Blueprint and put Maryland’s financial house in order, the state will spiral further into debt. This isn’t leadership. This is a failure, and Maryland taxpayers deserve better.
