SUICIDE BY COP Anthony Oliveras Jr shot after stabbing trooper at father’s front door.

HOLLYWOOD, MD – When Maryland State Troopers responded to a call for a suicidal person at a home in a housing subdivision just off Joy Chapel Road in Hollywood in St. Mary’s County on Friday, August 18, 2023, at about 10:45 pm, they were greeted by a man armed with a knife.

According to the Maryland State Police Media Relations staff in Pikesville, two troopers arrived at the residence of Anthony Oliveras Sr., located at 44036 West Mervell Court, and were met at the front door by Anthony Oliveras Jr, 22, who police say lived at the address.

The responding troopers were a four-year veteran of the Maryland State Police, apparently a field training officer, and the second trooper, a recent graduate of the Maryland State Police Training Academy. Investigators said Oliveras, who was armed with a knife, stepped outside of the residence and lunged toward one of the troopers, attempting to stab him.  The knife pierced the trooper’s uniform and ballistic vest.

Both troopers fired their agency-issued firearms, striking Oliveras. The two troopers, along with another trooper from the Leonardtown Barrack and a deputy from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Department, the latter two who arrived after the shooting, immediately rendered aid until emergency medical service personnel arrived.

Maryland court records do not reveal any criminal record for Anthony Oliveras Jr, nor does he appear to have any typical social media presence. His father’s Facebook page has a photo of what may be his son in a cap and gown graduation photo from 2019, which does not identify him other than a comment by a grandfather.  Anthony Oliveras Jr is listed as a member of the graduating class of Leonardtown High School in 2019.

Peyton Alexander Ham aimed a gun at a Maryland State Trooper in Leonardtown after calling in a 911 report for a man with a gun.

Anthony Oliveras Sr is a former Army Officer, worked at a defense contractor in St. Mary’s County, and posted the following message on his Facebook page on Veterans Day in 2021: “To all my family, friends, and anyone else who happens to see this post…It was an honor and privilege to serve. You are worth it.”

Anthony Oliveras Jr was transported by ambulance by the Hollywood Volunteer Rescue Squad to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown before being flown by helicopter to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. for treatment of his injuries.

THE CHESAPEAKE TODAY has learned that the condition of the suspect is critical, and he may not live.

Investigators from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit and Criminal Enforcement Division Central South arrived on the scene to lead the investigation of the shooting. The State Police Internal Affairs Unit also responded and is conducting a concurrent investigation. Both troopers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, as is the standard procedure for cases of the discharge of weapons during attacks on the life of a trooper.

Crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division also provided assistance. The St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office has also been contacted.
