(2021) Mecklenburg County Commonwealth’s Attorney Allen Nash agreed Monday to dismiss the case against George William Knisley IV after Knisley died in jail last month awaiting trial for murder in the 2019 death of Amy Renee Fabian in South Hill.

Knisley, 42, died February 11 while incarcerated at Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville. Nash said the death was “unnatural but not covid related.” He did not elaborate.

Knisley’s attorney, Kahlil Latif, appeared before Mecklenburg Circuit Judge S. Anderson Nelson at Monday’s hearing in Boydton to support the motion to dismiss the case and confirm Knisley’s death. He, too, did not elaborate on the cause of death.

Before he died, Latif said, Knisley had signed a plea agreement admitting guilt for the murder of his former girlfriend, Amy Renee Fabian, whose body was found in an abandoned vehicle near Route 138 in South Hill in May 2019.

Knisley had been the subject of a multi-state manhunt by police and the FBI after Fabian went missing and the dead body of her friend, Matthew T. Broyles, 29 of Powhatan, was found inside her Cumberland County home. MORE

The Suffolk NewsHerald reported that on May 30, 2019, law enforcement located Fabian’s remains and a Ford F-350 work truck, previously reported stolen in Maryland, in a wooded area off Route 138 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

Amy Renee Fabian was born on November 5, 1975, and left this world for another on May 30, 2019.

A service will be conducted by T. Floyd Irby on Saturday, July 27, 2019, at 2:00 PM in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St.

UPDATE: Murder victim identified; search continues for Amy Fabian

CUMBERLAND, Va. – Search efforts by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office remain ongoing Sunday (May 26) for a missing 43-year-old woman who has not been seen since authorities responded to her residence early Friday morning (May 24). Amy Renee Fabian is a white female with brown eyes and brown hair. She is 5’8 in height and weighs 124 lbs. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office continues to follow up on several leads and is still urging the public to call in with any information about Ms. Fabian or the man suspected in her disappearance, George W. Knisley IV, 41, of Carroll Co., Md. 

The incident began at approximately 3:30 a.m. Friday (May 24, 2019) when the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a homicide occurring at Fabian’s residence in the 200 block of Mount Airy Lane. Upon arriving at the location, an adult male was found deceased inside Fabian’s residence. Fabian was not there and has not been seen since.

The adult male has been identified as Matthew T. Broyles, 29, of Powhatan, Va. His remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy. Knisley has been charged with 1st-degree murder for Broyles’ death.

Knisley is believed to have left Fabian’s residence on Mount Airy Lane driving a 2002 white Ford F350 work truck, which was reported stolen out of Maryland on May 23, 2019. The truck is white with “Alleghany Industries” displayed on the side and has a license plate of “22L 231.” The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is still looking for the now-abandoned truck, which could be anywhere between Cumberland County and Mecklenburg County, Va.

During the investigation into the Cumberland County homicide, the South Hill Police Department received a 911 call at about 6:30 a.m. Friday (May 24, 2019) from a woman walking out to her car at her residence and encountering a male subject. The male, who fit Knisley’s description, threatened the woman at gunpoint and stole her 2013 Honda Civic. The man drove off in the Honda Civic. The woman was not injured.

The 2013 Honda Civic is white and has a Virginia license, “LAR 64.” The whereabouts of the Honda Civic are still unknown.

Late Friday evening (May 24), Knisley is suspected of having stolen a third vehicle in North Carolina. Later that night, he was involved in a pursuit with Raleigh, N.C. Police. Raleigh Police took Knisley into custody on the murder charge, awaiting extradition to Cumberland County, Va. Additional charges are pending.  

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is asking for anyone with information about the whereabouts of Amy Renee Fabian and/or either of the stolen vehicles to call 911 or (804)492-4120 or the Virginia State Police at #77.

CUMBERLAND, Va. – A three-state murder scenario let loose at the start of the Memorial Day weekend when a Maryland man allegedly killed a woman in Virginia and was captured in North Carolina, say the Virginia State Police.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office received word early Saturday morning, May 25, 2019, from North Carolina authorities that they had George W. Knisley IV of Carroll Co., Md., in custody. Knisley was wanted for the murder of a Cumberland County man and for questioning in the disappearance of a Cumberland County woman. With the assistance of the Virginia State Police, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is actively following up on leads related to the disappearance of the woman.

Late Friday evening (May 24), Knisley is suspected of stealing a third vehicle in North Carolina. Later that night, he was involved in a pursuit with Raleigh, N.C. Police. Raleigh Police took Knisley into custody, and he is being held on a 1st-degree murder charge from Cumberland County, Va. Additional charges are pending.

Even though Knisley is now in custody, the search continues for Ms. Fabian. The Alert also remains active. Ms. Fabian has brown eyes and brown hair. She is 5’8 in height and weighs 124 lbs.

• Knisley was ordered to stay away from a victim in Carroll County, Maryland, on May 5, 2019, by a District Court Judge in a case of domestic violence – a craft which he apparently is perfecting.  He was ordered to surrender his firearms and stay completely away in all manner of contacts, from the victim.
• In a plea deal with the Baltimore County State’s Attorney on April 25, 2011, Knisley entered a guilty plea to robbery, and several other counts of armed robbery and assault were dropped. THE DEAL: Knisley was sentenced to ten years in prison. On Jan. 18, 2019, his case was reopened as he lived at 5111 Hanover Pike, Manchester, Md.  
• Knisley racked up another plea deal when he pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary on Nov. 6, 2007, and three years of probation.
• Knisley also found time to escape prison and had five months added to his incarceration on June 7, 2005, in Carroll County Circuit Court.
• Knisley picked up three years in prison on August 5, 2004, as he built his career in crime with a verdict of guilty for fourth-degree burglary.
• Knisley’s badass days were building as reflected in charges of harassment and telephone misuse on the Stet Docket on June 30, 2003, in Carroll County Circuit Court as the Carroll County Jail kept the light on for him.
• Knisley found time to experiment with domestic violence in 2003 as another ex-parte hearing was held in Carroll County Circuit Court on Sept. 2, 2003, which ended with a final protective order.
• A guilty verdict in Carroll County Circuit Court to the charge of fourth-degree burglary for Knisley resulted in a sentence of 285 days of jail with credit for time served on Nov. 8, 2001.
